A charming Victorian ceramic trinket box featuring a colorful illustrated lid depicting the interior room where William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1564. The circular lid is decorated with a detailed period-style scene of figures gathered inside a traditional timber-framed room, surrounded by a decorative dotted border and the inscription, “The Room in Which Shakespeare Was Born, 1564, Stratford on Avon.”
The lid rests on a cream-colored ceramic base with a gently rounded profile and a beautifully aged, crazed glaze. The scene is characteristic of Victorian Prattware pot lids, which were originally produced to decorate the tops of commercial ceramic pots and are now collected for their historical imagery and decorative appeal. This example has been paired with a ceramic base, creating a lovely little box for displaying or storing small keepsakes.
A wonderful piece for collectors of Victorian ceramics, Shakespeare memorabilia, or English literary antiques.
