A wonderful piece of English social history, this antique clay smoking pipe was recovered from the River Thames in London, England. With its long, slender stem, rounded bowl and naturally aged ivory-coloured clay, it offers a tangible connection to the everyday lives of people who lived and worked along the Thames centuries ago.
Clay tobacco pipes were once commonplace in Britain, particularly from the 16th through the 19th centuries. Examples recovered from the Thames are especially evocative, having spent years submerged in the river before being rediscovered.
The pipe displays an attractive aged surface, with visible wear, discolouration and some damage to the stem end consistent with its recovered condition.
